Gemini 4 Argon: frontier routing, 1M long decode, and the October 13 agent board
On October 13, 2026 Google DeepMind released Gemini 4 Argon as its flagship reasoning model for complex coding, science, enterprise workflows, and agentic work. This guide covers availability, pricing, long-decode setup, Antigravity placement, Fairwind access, and how enterprises should route it against Sol, Opus, and Muse Wonder.

Introduction
Argon is not a Flash refresh. Google positions it as the Gemini 4 flagship for hard multi-step work: large refactors, scientific loops, enterprise document workflows, and agent sessions that need depth rather than cheap throughput. The same day GitHub put Argon into Copilot, so routing and spend now span Gemini API, Antigravity, and Copilot model pickers.

| Plan note | Not available on Free tier or Google AI Pro API plan |
Google reports #1 on the Vals Index for finance, coding, legal, and tax-style economic tasks, plus an 87% Embodied Reasoning (ERQA) score. Treat vendor benchmarks as directional. Re-run the org harness before any default swap.
Long decode is the migration detail that breaks old clients
Changing the model string alone does not unlock the 1M output path. Without long-decode setup, streaming still stops around 64K tokens and non-streaming around 32K. Official guidance: upgrade the Google GenAI SDK and set `max_output_tokens` above 65,536. Current SDKs enable `automatic_continuation` by default and stitch hops into one response. REST or older SDKs need an explicit continuation loop with `continuation_token` while `finish_reason` is `CONTINUATION`.
Where Argon sits on the routing board
| Lane | Candidate | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Closed planner (English coding / agents) | GPT-6.1 Sol / Opus 5.5 | Keep until Argon wins cost-per-completed-task |
| New Google frontier planner | gemini-4-argon | Shadow-route on migrations, science, and long agent jobs |
| Meta agent lane | Muse Wonder / Wonder Full | Bench beside Argon for personal/professional agent loops |
| Volume worker | Haiku 5.5 / Gemini Flash family | Do not replace with Argon for classification or fan-out |
| Defender cyber | Fairwind Argon access | Separate OU and legal review; not a general coding default |
Google’s launch narrative leans on Antigravity agent loops for Chrome-scale refactors, ADK performance work, Gemma inference speedups, and scientific pipelines. That is signal for long-horizon agent harnesses, not permission to put Argon on every ticket triage bot.
Safety and Fairwind
Google describes a multi-layer Frontier Safety Framework stack: jailbreak resistance, misuse refusals, agent-alignment training against unauthorized shortcuts, a real-time misalignment monitor on reasoning and actions, and strong indirect prompt-injection results (Gray Swan IPI attack success reported at 0.7% across 15 adaptive attempts). Shortcut attempts on coding benchmarks where models have no incentive to hold back are reported at 2%. Fairwind Program access expands for trusted defenders who need Argon without cyber guardrails. Keep that lane gated the same way Flash Cyber was gated earlier in 2026: Gemini 3.8 Flash and Fairwind.
What this means for developers
- Pin `gemini-4-argon` only after GenAI SDK upgrade and a long-decode smoke test past 65K tokens.
- Log model_id, thinking level, hop count, and finish_reason on every agent run.
- Compare Argon in Antigravity against Claude Managed Agents dynamic workflows on one document-scale job: /blog/claude-managed-agents-dynamic-workflows-october-2026.
- Expect computer use (preview), code execution, search grounding, and structured outputs in the same stack; still require human approval for irreversible actions.
- Do not hard-code Free-tier assumptions. Argon is paid-only on the API.
What this means for businesses
- FinOps needs an intro-price calendar: rates double on December 1, 2026 for the public Argon SKU.
- Copilot admins must decide Argon enablement separately from Gemini API keys: /blog/github-copilot-argon-managed-settings-agent-hooks-october-2026.
- Scientist and Fairwind access programs are capacity-gated. Name owners before applications sit in shared inboxes.
- Antigravity agent IDs still age. Keep the Oct 5 Antigravity cutover checklist current so Argon does not land on a dead preview string.
Adoption checklist
- 01Inventory planner defaultsList every service still defaulting to Gemini 3.x Flash, Sol, Opus, or Muse Spark/Wonder for high-stakes work.
- 02Enable Argon in a staging projectPaid Gemini API key, upgraded SDK, max_output_tokens above 65,536, and continuation metrics.
- 03Run three harness tasksOne multi-file refactor, one long research synthesis, one tool-using agent with MCP. Score quality, hop count, and spend.
- 04Decide Copilot policyEnable or disable Argon in Business/Enterprise model policy before users discover it in the picker.
- 05Separate FairwindIf cyber defender access is required, route it through a named OU with logging, not the general coding lane.
Conclusion
Gemini 4 Argon is the Google frontier slot for October 2026 agent boards. The capability story is long-horizon depth. The engineering story is long decode and SDK readiness. The buyer story is intro pricing that expires on November 30 and a Copilot surface that can open spend outside the Gemini console. Ship evals first. Flip defaults second.
